I have heard conflicting stories about this being the most painful place for a tattoo and others saying its not so bad. I have decided this is where I want my next one, I just need some assurance from some tattoo veterans on their thoughts. How long would you think it would take if it covers from bottom of ribs to under armpits, before filling in color just the outline. Any info or stories people want to share would be greatly appreciated

part of my tattoo is on my ribs, and yes it hurt there, but I'm glad i got it done there, as i wouldn't have looked right anywhere else. i am going back soon for some touch-ups, and am not worried at all about the pain, so it can't have been that bad.
I can't answer for how long it would take. I had my whole tat in one five hour sitting. its not just the size of the art, but also how much detail is in it. It would be difficult to estimate the time without knowing what you are getting. An artist should be able to give you an estimate of time before you go in.
personally i think the pain only lasts a little while, but the art lasts forever, so if that is where you want it, then go for it.

cholla youve got to forget about the pain ,ive had my armsdone ,back done ,chest stomach,BUTi can honestly say my ribs were the worst tattoo pain i have ever felt,i thought i could never get the tattoo finished and i couldnt go through that pain again.now im not the big macho take anything ya throw at me kinda bloke,so ive worked out that when im having my ribs done when its getting very painfull i ask my tattooist to move on to another less painfull place that way i dont get so sore that i dread the next session.Ok it may be a bit slower technique but its getting done and i dont want my sessions to be purely pain filled hours.theres a lot of bull spoken about how much pain you can take .You always hear the guy boasting about how he sat for 10 hours and bled buckets of blood but it didnt hurt .rubbish its lies, its going to hurt but instead of being in complete agony for many hours isnt it better to work out a way to minimize the pain and still get the tatt you want??. And dont forget theres also cream that will help numb the pain and it DOESNT affect the tattoo.

i have over 10 hours on my ribs and still need about 3 more. its great, like rowdy said forget about it if thats where you want it. suck it up and get it done, you wont remember how much it hurts two weeks later when you are staring at a cool tattoo.

it does hurt, but what is awesome is always worth sacrificing for.
