How many of you have had a tattoo get infected? Was it because of a dirty facility or your own lack of care? If you really care for a tattoo and have a clean facility what do you think the chances of infection are?

I have just the one tattoo and I followed ever instruction that I was given and had no problems. I really think that as long as you listen and follow what you are told that you will be fine.

I have had 3 tattoos and not a single one has gotten infected. It is very important that you follow the instructions of your artist and keep the area clean and moisturized. Also make sure that the shop that you go to is well known and clean.

I have posted this somewhere else but i will do it again just in case you missed it ( I'm not trying to sound nasty here even though it does sound like it even to me). My wife got a tat done on her breast and had no trouble. The she went and got another tat done on her lower leg close to her ankle. The day before she had her legs waxed. But the Tattoooist still shaved her leg. Well she got an infection on the little butterfly. She actually got what looked like a hole in the middle of it. She done exactlly the same thing except for the waxing as the last time. Same tattooist same care and still got the infection on it. So I suppose its really the luck of the draw. But I really do think that its more like you have to be very unlucky especially here in Australia as the laws are really strict here. I hope this helps. The Tattman. Very Happy

Tattman, it never sounded mean Smile

Well my 3rd (got my 4th today yay!) one looks great except its a little smudged, however I don't know why. I didn't soak it. Just some of the lines, as its a tiny ferret paw print.

I think maybe i washed it to much and with warm water, but i was just doing what i normally do - 4 times daily with my fingers Crying or Very sad NO ONE CAN TELL BUT I CAN BECAUSE I STARE AT IT! I don't really mind. But i don't want it to happen again. So I'm thinking of washing with cold water the next few days as it apparently tightens pores? And tomorrow i'll do it 3 times instead of 4 as i have a long day without access to a bathroom.

My 4th is a phoenix i got today and it has red on it, ive not really had an allergic reaction but some jeans buttons annoy my skin, nickel. So I'll see what happens here. At the moment it doesn't hurt at all.

I've got 15 tats personally. Never once been infected. Now on the other hand, I gave my girlfriend a few and she got 1 infected. Same thing someone else mentioned about the "hole". I took over on her after care for her and reserected it. The cause was she worked for a motorcycle shop and the day after i did it on her ankle she wore her pant leg up and allowed all the dirt and stuff from the shop to get on it. It's always important to fallow the instructions of your artist to a t. If you have any concerns, return to the shop and let the artist look at it. They can tell ya the best way to handle it from there.

Let's see... Yes I have had a small infection on a tribal... It was parttially my fault though... The tattoist at the time couldn't get the ink to stay in my arm, so after turning my arm into hambuger I told her to stop!!! I kept the tat gooped-up and that probably did more harm than good:( I do have a scar, but had a nother artist go over it and it is not visible at all... Smile

Here's one... My Girl friend is allergic to about everything. My studio is latex free, but we have found that certain inks or manufactures don't fully disclose there MSDS as they should... Our first BAD experiance was with UV ink... and most resently the use of A&D and/or TATWAX has led to unwelcome results. I have done a bit of research and find it odd that A&D caused such a problem... She usually uses BAG BALM... have any of you experienced A&D and/or TATWAX problems???

Thanks

A&D if not used very sparingly will actually pull the color out. It can also make for slow healing as it seals the area from air and natural skin breathing. A&D is a good product for aftercare use, however it has to be used very lightly. As far as infection it is very possible with any prodeuct to get infected. When you put too much on it will trap all the airborne "goop" right on the fresh tat. The trick is with any aftercare salve is very light coatings. You only want to apply enough to keep the skin pliable. If it scabs and gets tight, it will rip and couse problems. I recomend A&D for the first 2 days 3 times a day then switch to a fragrance/die free skin lotion. Also stay away from products like neosporin and such as they pull the color aswell.

Never had any infections at all , but i always get the few spots that get a thicker scab and seems to last 3-4 days longer than the rest .
Not sure if that is normal but it has always happened to me .
I normally wrap in gling wrap if i need to wear any clothing over the tat , or if just at home leave it open to the air .

i had my second tattoo done a few weeks ago, a pair od cherries above my ankle. i followed the book looking after it however it become red, swollen and very itchy. After going to the doctors, i was told to not cover it or put anything on it, just to take the antibiotics (i thought it best to listen to the doctor!) however now it looks terrible, the colours very faint and the green is extremely faded, i cant really see a where the line would be around it.

How long should i wait to have it redone? Also, could i be allergic to the green or something? also, b4 tattooing me i have ametop put on, but to my knowledge im not allergic to it. Can you get different types of green?

i have never had a tattoo get infected, nor do i know anyone that has. as long as you take care of it the way you're told to, you shouldn't have any problems. just make sure you keep it clean and whatnot. here in va, all the artists tell you to use a&d for 3 days (keeping the tattoo moist), and then for a following 2-3 weeks use a nonscented lotion or cocoa butter balm. doing that, i've never had any problems.

in my 3 to 4 years of tattooing only had two infections on custormers. one was a golden staff infection. that was the worst one Iv seen it was kinda like the tattoo didnt want to heal and nearly pushed all the ink out except for some brown and green left a nasty scare as well. the other was a milder from of a staff infection it looked like puffy red pimpils around the edge of the tattoo this one was saved with a little touch up. the infections was not caused by me because my set up is clean as, if there was a posibilty of been over clean thats me and it wasnt because my custormers didnt look after there tattoo they followed the after care instructions I gave them. as it turns out staff bactiria can live in the skin, so becareful

I'm a little obsessive about making sure I keep up with the proper aftercare of my tattoos - but it pays off as I've never had any problems or infections with any of mine. I also never have had any scabs, therefore no pulling of color, etc.

I contribute all this to doing the aftercare exactly as told to and for the full time it's healing. (I think a lot of people are good at doing it the first few days, but then slack off before it's completely healed).

i have seven tattoos and not one has been infected (touch wood!) i really do believe that it is all about aftercare (as long as the tattoo has been done well). you must care for your tattoo and that doesn't just mean for the first week, 'tattoo goo' can be used for the life of your tattoo and it will keep it looking good! x
