I'm going to get my last name tatted tomorrow. This will be my first tattoo and want to get it on my leftside ribcage area. I heard that was really painful so I'm thinking of getting it on the back of my arm (tricep area) How much pain should I expect?

First time on the ribs will definately be a ripper for you. Tha arms are pretty good area to start on. Can still be covered if need be.
Its totally bearable mate. First 5mins will probably be the worst, til your natural endorphins kick in. You will be fine. Wink

Honestly i myself along with other people think that on your arm feels like a bee stinging you...honestly it didnt bother me at all...

But I have seen people cry and even pass out as i was tattooing them...

It all depends on your pain tolerance....and dont hype it up to hurt or it will...and be sure to eat before you go Very Happy

just bear in mind that if tattoos were as unbearably painful as some popular urban myths like to make out there would never be as many people with as many tattoos as there are. all tattoos hurt a *little* bit and some places hurt more than others. there are even areas within areas that hurt more than other parts of that area (?? Laughing

). over bone is always going to be worse than fleshy parts as well. forget about the pain and think about how excited you are going to be about your tat.

^ Pretty much agree with everything above.
Every person is different and paint tolerance is way different. I have very high tolerance but there are places that are just insane how much they hurt but just half and inch over I can't even feel the needle. It's weird. You'll just have to experience it.
on the other hand I've seen people get full rib cage (4-5 hour job) as they first tattoo and they go through it like a champ.
