Hi folks,
I'm looking at getting my first tattoo done. I want a dharma wheel, probably like this: but ideally without the ribbons and possibly in black and gray. The artist I've been speaking to by email has said that he'd advise keeping the ribbons in so it breaks up the line and the circle doesn't distort, and also mentioned it not spreading under the skin in time.

After hearing that, I have noticed that a lot of tattoos with prominent circles in them are broken up by various things, but then again a lot aren't. Could someone explain the issue to me, and also what was meant by 'not spreading under the skin in time'?

It all depends on the artist. I myself don't mind symmetry, but hate having to do a circle without any breaks in it. I have seen some artists that excell in complex geometrical shapes, but they are few and far between. I wouldn't worry about what's going to happen for the long term because if you find someone who can do what your asking easily..... They've been doing it for long enough to put the lines in propperly. Best thing you can do is choose your artist carefully for this peice. Make sure you see a number of peices from him/her before choosing them to take on doing this tattoo. If they have nothing similar to show you..... Run (Don't walk!!) in the opposite direction.

Thanks, that's helpful. I've got a couple of people in mind, so I'll reexamine their work with that in mind.
