Just a little rant that I am sure will get some feedback.
I read a few different forums as many of us do (though this IS the best) Very Happy
and I see a lot of people saying... oh why get that everyone has that get something original because you will appreciate it more etc etc etc.

Ok well here's my two cents worth...
Yes an original tattoo is something special and when any one of my clients brings in a piece that they drew or had drawn for them or have me draw, I throw away the stencil and any copies I may have of the drawing and give the original back to them. This is their tattoo and it is personal.

Now someone comes in and says I saw a tattoo of a pretty pink cat, or whatever, and fell in love with it and I want it. This person is very excited about their tattoo, they are all ready to get it done and have a smile from ear to ear. Am I going to say, no you don't want that because someone else has it and it means nothing if you get the same thing. ABSOLUTELY FREAKING NOT! I am going to make my customer happy!

So when I read someone that is almost apologetic in describing what they want for a tattoo because its been done so many times I want to grab them by the shoulders and say HEY... do you really want this tattoo? Then who cares if its been done. If you are excited about it and its what you want then get it and don't worry about what others may think.

It makes me so mad when I read these prima-dona artists that think that not only are they an artist but the all knowing tattoo god that has the final say on what someone else should get for a tattoo.

Whew
That feels better.
Just my little rant for the day.
I guess winter and this DAM rain is getting to me. LOL
Cheers

I agree also Ed.

I love doing flash almost as much as doing custom. I also think that there's nothing wrong with doing what's been done before. I'm also not trying to get famous or anything, I'm just doing enough to keep it enjoyable.

Now for the good news! Very Happy

I've been asked to store a very large flash collection for a freind of mine. It consists of all of his flash and all that he inherited from his uncle who was in the tattoo buisness since the late 60's. I picked it all up last week. I won't be able to go through it all in the next year I'll bet. Very Happy

I so agree with you Ed. I have both flash and custom on me, it's all what a person really wants, it shouldn't matter what someone else has, it's what you want cause you are the one who has to wear it. I went to an artist and all she wanted to do is custom, but only her design, she didn't like my idea and wanted me to go with hers, well whatever, we agreed to disagree and I will never go to her for a tattoo. You need to be open or you will loose alot of business whether you are good or not.

agreed agreed agreed. the single most important thing with getting a tat, IMHO, is the desire to get it done so much that you can't live without it another day. for me, if i'm not 100% sure i want the tat i won't get it, but when i'm sure then nothing will stop me.

except the perpetual lack of money, that is... Rolling Eyes

I think your very sensible and very right. i have 7 tattoos that are complely unique because they are my design and 1 that is of the shop wall. i wanted completly unique tattoos but when i saw a really beautiful black rose tattoo i just has to have it. Who cares if somone else has it because it will always be special to me as i got it in memory of my late nanna. your comments are well justified x

i agree with you, if someone wants a tattoo they shouldnt have to explain to people why, just because its off a shop wall, its their porogotive to have any tattoo they want too, nice post ed Smile....

I agree.... to a cretain extent. I can never understand how someone can go in without any idea what they want and just pick something off a wall and get it right then and there. I'm one to say you should probably think about that design for a while and make sure it's really something you want to do.

I'm just afraid a lot of the people that do it on such a whim are going to regret it later, and I'm all about absolutely adoring every piece of art on your body.

I'm not really judging anyone that has done it this way... I just think it's better for the person in the longrun if they think about it for a while

I don't plan tattoos at all. If I happen to be at a friends shop during a slow time, it goes like this.

Friend:
Gary, since it's slow let's do some work on you.

Me:
Okay.

Friend:
What should we do?

Me:
I dunno. Is there something you've been wanting to do but haven't gotten the chance?(Within reason)

Friend:
Yeah! Let's do a bla, bla, bla.

Me:
Sure I'm okay with that! Do you want to go eat something before we start?

Friend(This would be my best friend Vince in this case):
Nah, I want to see you squirm! We'll eat after we're done.

Laughing

I don't ever advise anyone to do things like I do.

Gary you sound a lot like me. We are always doing that and lets just say we all have some strange things on us LMAO. We even tattooed our logo on everyone in the shops leg. Now If I can only decide what I want for some fill work on my black and gray arm.

I have asked myself this question before too but then why do we spend money on flash and hang it on the wall? I don't do much flash work at least exactly as it looks in the flash but I have done them. Again I look at the customer and if they are excited about it I say... nice choice this will look great on you.... and away I go. It still comes down to THEIR choice! We have the responsibility to advise, explain, do good work and make the customer happy not make their decision for them even of we don't particularly agree.
Now don't get me wrong... there are things I WON'T do such as tattoo someones face top of hands or knuckles, which goes against my morals nor will I do a 5 pointed crown or skull with wings and we all know why.

But as far as flash, I agree I would love to "make" it special but if the customer wants exactly what they see that's wat I do.
