i would say the outline but only the odd bit when it is near the bone, otherwise i dont really feel any pain, the only real pain i felt was when i had my tattoo on my leg but thats it.

I think it depends on the artist. Some artists have a light touch. Then there are others who can be brutal. The last tat I got hurt all over. The guy climbed into the chair with me and was just baring down on my back. I guess you can say he really gets into his work. It was painful, to say the least. It didn't help that it was on the back of my shoulder. Those bony areas hurt the worst.

Went this past weekend had had my larger back tattoo started. Don't know what I was saying earlier about "not really remembering much pain" as this one down right hurt in spots. I would definitely say the outlining was the worse part!

Also, this one goes across my back (instead of just on my shoulder like the other two times). It's three parrots and the worse part was the middle parrot who is on my backbone...and of course this is the most detailed one to boot!

I find it depends on my tattooists mood. If hes bored or unhappy he digs more and shades harder but the last time I went he was really upbeat and I never felt a thing. I think the outline hurts more, my artist dig more with the outline.

I have two tattoos (going for my third next week). I have a scroll on my back with my kids names and two lovebirds on my ankle. The one on my ankle hurt like hell!

had a A4 size tattoo at the brighton convention on my shoulder/back
and both parts of the outline and colouring hurt.

Colouring wasnt to bad to start but after 5 1/2 hours(including ouline)
was getting sore.

Shading proply hurts most of all

The first time I went the outline hurt more. For the shading part my artist put that cooling spray on my arm. Which I didn't feel a lot of the shading. My second time the outline didn't hurt at all. The shading was a bitch though, she had to go really hard to get the pigments to stick in. She also didn't use the cool spray XD

I find that the outlining is a sharper sort of pain, more concentrated in one place, where the shading is closer to a burning sensation. Either way, both hurt after a while!

I got my second piece today, a medium sized piece on my back, slightly below my left shoulder. Since I had the first one on my hip, I had something to compare to. For my hip, the shading hurt more than the outline, in fact the outline tickled lol. But for the shoulder piece, when he went above my shoulder blade for the outline, it hurts, I'm telling you. I almost fell asleep throughout the shading though. I'll post a photo of this piece when its completely done (something happened at the tattoo studio but thats another story)
