ive been told (long after having my tattoos ) that its not good to put vasiline on tattoos while they are healing....this true?
i used vasiline on both my tats when they were healing up, im pretty sure i was advised too....for my second one i was given this tattoo aftercare stuff that was just like vasiline but made from hemp and smelt funny, so i only used it during the day...and vasiline at night.
i had no problems with my tats and they healed up pretty quick, and healed up well..... |

Artists everywhere argue about using Vaseline or not; another thing they tend to disagree on is whether to put on a second bandage. I've always been told to just go ahead and listen to what your artist says about it--it worked fine for you and many others. I think in the end, it's all circumstantial anyway since what might work well for one person might be horrible for the next. I wouldn't worry about what you use though as long as you haven't run into any problems. |

| Vaseline is never a good idea. At my shop we give you A & D Ointment to use for a few days...in thin layers of course, and you can use any NON SCENTED lotion as well. I do suggest Ink Fixx though. |

| The state of Ohio law says we must put bacitracin or similar onto the tattoo before client leaves. So we suggest using a very thin layer of bacitracin on the tattoo. You still want it to breathe, so it's ok to not put anything at all, but let it heal with out anything extra. if it's too dry, then use tatwax or A&D or bacitracin. but Bacitracin may be a little harsh for the skin if used too long. |

| Most think that it will make the ink spread. Aquafor is the best stuff to use. Make sure to stay away from anything with to much Lanolin in it. It is an exfoliant. |

The popular product through the seventies and eighties to apply was Vaseline intensive Care lotion and somewhere along the line someone forgot the last bit and started the just vaseline myth which is Petroleum Jelly and all manner of muck sticks to like some things do to a blanket.
The stuff I use is spray on anteseptic for burns with Lignocaine and use that only immediately after and maybe once the next day.
I have always stood by if you need to baby it don't get one, the healing process is best left alone and antiseptics will have little effect after 24 hours as if an infection is going to set in nothing on the surface will help it alot, though the lignocaine does take the sting out of it that I kinda like, but then I've been a very bad tattoo person and deserve punishment. |

<smack> ha ha ha
Your not bad.... i agree with ya. LOL
Best healing is to let your body heal it naturally, air out, a good shower, pat dry... leave it alone and don't let anyone touch it. Ointment if so dry it's bothering you, and it needs to be super thin, barely there. Chemical's are harsh on the skin. and if your tattoo place follows their state laws and are inspected, they follow the procedures and have already cleaned and sanitized the area enough that you could leave it alone period.
IMPORTANT: Don't set the exposed tattooed area on a public bar counter, or restaurant table. ICK... nothing like giving yourself instant hepatitis. You have NO IDEA who just sat there, or if they washed their hands, or laid their infected wound in the same spot, leaving spores for serious problems to migrate into a new home..... YOU! |

Personally, i wouldn't keep using it. But i use tatwax, because it's light enough not to smother it, but has good healing properties in it. - But, if you are using it, and obtaining good results, then keep going as you have been. Just don't gob it on thick by any means. You want it to stay dry, but not crackly hurt dry.
Hope this helps! |

I use an extremely thin layer of A & D for the first two days or so and attempt to keep it covered for the first few nights, only for sleep (I've had to unstick myself from the sheets and it isn't pleasant.) Clean and dry with a light moisturizer for a couple of days afterwards and I heal clean. I do have some dragonflies on my shoulders and forgot the moisturizer on those, but they turned out fine too. |

I live in a very arid climate and lotion is just about a MUST as far as skin care is concerned. I used Neosporin on my tats for the first two or three days after the procedures. But this next tat I'm getting is very large and is going to be on my back where I can't reach it.
Can I have my son swab a thin layer of baby oil (with a cotton ball) onto the tat after it's clean? |
