i just finished up my first tattoo and i really didn't know any of the proper etiqette for the process. i don't think i was too big a **** to the artist, but who knows once i was out the door.

anyway, i'm wondering about the cost of the tattoo. we arranged a price as i was sitting down to have the tattoo done and i'm wondering if i owe any more than that?

what is expected post tattoo? are you supposed to tip your artist? is the cost you are quoted the entire cost with that figured in already? i just don't want to have the artist think i'm a **** because i didn't know what was supposed to happen.

thanks.

Many artists expect a tip and many customers do tip them. Since you are making this post......... Sounds like you feel a little bad that you didn't tip. Don't worry about it. If you agreed on a price beforehand and you didn't try to haggle the artist down....... He/she should have no complaints about you as a valued client.

Welcome to the board. Smile

i wasn't really prepared i guess. my understanding was that we would need one more session, but i healed well enough in one week from the last session, that he just finished up the whole thing tonight.

what is a guideline for tipping? i mean how much should i tip for a $500 tattoo?

thanks.

i'm not sure if there is a guideline for tipping - i just gave what i thought was appropriate which was an extra 20 euros on top of a 250 euro piece. tipping is always more effective when it is spontaneous, the almost obligatory aproach in the us devalues the whole gesture in my opinion.

like garydaza said, if you paid the price agreed before starting the work i very much doubt the artist would have considered you a ****. if you want to show your appreciation to the artist you could always go back to show them the finished and healed piece and leave him/her the price of a couple of beers while you're at it.

For one thing all I can say is thanks that I live in Australia. This tipping thing is something we dont understand and I don't want to. I hope it never weaves its ugly head into here like most things do. Cause I will never tip.

enjoy your tattoo Very Happy

If you are worried about not tipping , maybe pop round the studio in a week or so to show him the healed tat and take him a 6 pack of beer ....

Tipping in the States is way out of hand. Even bathroom attendants get tips.
As far as the Tattoo goes I sometimes get tips from customers and many times do not and I never let it affect me. In my opinion a great tip is bringing friends back for ink. Don't feel bad about not tipping but it would be nice to stop back to show your artist how much you like your healed tat.

Repeat visits for more work, new tatts, big smiles, bring a friend to get a tatt.Ithink any and all of the above are more important than any tip.If i leave youre studio with a big smile on my face because of the work youve done, you could put your price up 20,dollars and id still come back happy.Good workmanship and a nice atmosphere will gaurantee more visits which means more money.

I always tip my artist at least £10 a session. I'm sure he makes it hurt less and heal faster if I tip.

Very Happy

I have gotten tips before but it isn't often. I'm not offended myself, provided your tipping me because you are very pleased with your piece. I wouldn’t want tipped just because you feel you should.

Generally-speaking, it's very similar to going to get your hair cut. You tip the hairstylist/barber; tattoo artist is no different, since they are providing you a service.

I have never tipped a hairdresser in my life. I think this is one example of the complete difference between the UK and the USA, clearly our way is better.

I tip because my tattoo artist goes out of his way in getting what I want.

...and I refuse to get into a debate as to which country is better. It's stupid, so let's not even go into that kind of topic.
US differs from UK customs, alright?

Refuse as much as you wish i was not inviting a debate merely making a comment (which in line with most of the stuff i put on here was complete gibberish and meant as a joke).

However i am curious as to why a disscusion about the differences between the two countries would be branded as stupid, and on what basis we should "not even go into that". Indeed I am tempted to raise a thread in the general section of this site purely to discuss the differences however that would most likely be quite juvenile so i wont.
