BOTH ||||. I think the lines may be slightly easier because hopefullythe line isnt to long so you only get short stabs of pain .The shading depends on where it is i spose ,some spots are very easy and others make you burn really bad and are very sore .With me it definately depends on where it is. |

The outline is a more intense pain but is normally quite short lived, the colouring is not as painful but is usually much longer in duration, simply put it hurts.
But not as much as catching your nipples in the zip of your all in one leather number |

The outline is what got me! I thought it was really sore. But the colouring and shading was nothing to me. Didn't want the colouring to end |

I got 2 hours of outline and one hour of shading in one sitting.
I found the shading wasn't as painful as the outline, although in some areas where she had already outlined, it hurt just as much all the same. |

well for me it was the shading. i don't know if it hurt that much more but maybe its because the artist tends to spend more time working over one spot . maybe also by then, after a couple of hours, i was getting tired of needles being thrust into my arm god knows how many hundred times a second!!
of course, it depends a lot on where the lining or shading is happening. seems like a couple of centimetres to the left or right can make a hell of a difference whatever it is. |

| For me, the shading in my tattoos always hurt more for some reason. Interesting to see others here had the exact opposite experience. |

| The outline was definitely the worst. Felt like the needles got really deep. The shading... I can almost say it was a bit comfortable. Not really a pain, more like annoying scratching. |

I just completed my fourth tattoo. There were some areas of the body where neither shading or outline was so terrible.
The tattoo goes over the shoulder, onto my collarbone. Every time the needle went into that spot, it was painful, no matter what. My tattoo artist scolded me, telling me I needed to relax the muscles.
Once he worked on the shoulder, it wasn't so bad. It's mostly muscle, so I was able to sit through a lot of needlework.
I guess it depends from person to person. |

I just got my first tattoo today. I was putting it off until I was thin, but I finally figured out that I'm never gonna be thin -- but fat chicks can be sexy, too! So I got that sexy lower-back tattoo that I've been wanting. And it turns out, being more insulated made it easier. Yay fat!
So...I vote for the outline -- that bad boy HURT, I ain't gonna lie. The fill-in was almost like a massage after that. It felt like he was slicing into my hip when he outlined my butterflies, but when he colored it in I barely felt anything. It actually hurts more now -- stings -- than the coloring did. So, all in all, not too bad. And I love my tattoo. |

| It all depends on the size of tattoo and the person, and most of all were you get it! , If you just get a outline because its a large piece and you need 2 or 3 sessions, the shading usually will hurt more people say. If you get a small piece some say the outline depending on were they get it. And then you get the person that says it did not hurt at all, tattoo artist like them because they can sit for a long time and usually get more than 1 tattoo. Allot of it is mind of matter if you really want it you can put your mind in the right place and most people can sit threw it with little to no pain. ( usually) But most off all trust your artist make sure he is the right one for you. There are many great artist out there check, and recheck before you sit down and regret your tattoo then the pain will mean nothing as the pain of looking at a poorly done tattoo for the rest of your life!!! |

| My experience is that the outline hurt more than the shading. Actually it was not shading but black filling because in Polynesian tattoo there is (generally) no shading. Mine is a Maori half sleeve, starting on the shoulder blade and ending on the chest. It took about 5 hours in one sitting - 1h30 for free hand design and 3h30 for inking. I was sooo happy when it was over! I don't think I could have endured much longer! The most painful area was the one between the neck and the top of the shoulder. The skin there seems to be thiner and more sensitive; it is the only area which bleeded a bit. Anyways, it was definitely worth the pain! |

They are completely different feelings. Both have pain associated with them.
The outline is a much sharper pain but the shading and coloring can get plain old aggravating. Much like scraping a sunburn. |

I've been trying to remember while reading the responses, but I find that I don't really remember the pain part (must be like childbirth - we wouldn't keep doing it if we remembered too much...haha!)
I also think placement has a lot to do with it. My last was on the back of my neck and while uncomfortable at times, it never really hurt. Of course it only took about 20 minutes, so that might of had something to do with it, too
My larger one is on my shoulder and the outlining hurt a few times (maybe when two outlines intersected or were close?). The filling in wasn't so bad and I remember thinking "Is it already over" when he was finished about 2.5 hours later.
Of course reading this has made me all nervous again as I go in tomorrow for my biggest one yet (thanks guys, I was feeling good about it and now am feeling apprehensive...ha!). I think the part I'm most nervous about is that it will cross my backbone and I've always heard it hurts more going over bones. |
