Hi angelwing its a question thats very hard to answer,my first tattoo was a big red scorpion down my right forearm, and to be honest the artist threatened to stop if i didnt stop swearing ,so i had to pull myself together and put up with it.Now i have a backpiece , a full left sleeve part right sleeve and my front is outlined and partly coloured. Now there are people like my wife who can stand being tattood for at least 6 hours and it doesnt bother her,i myself find 3 hours about right. The feeling is best described like being scratched and sunburnt, a good tattooist can help enourmously by telling you youre doing great and just reassuring you everything is ok.Yes it hurts but you do get a fantastic buzz when the session is over and you have this beautifull tattoo there, it makes you want another session as soon as possible,to finish it will hurt you but its worth it ,be posative try to relax and concentrate on good things and you will be fine im sure.good luck and dont forget to post some piccys when you get your tatt done. Smile

It hurts .....simple as that , if some one tells you it don't then i think they may be telling lies Very Happy
Some spots are just a little tingly , some spots make you clench your jaw , some spots make you want to stand up and go home ......but it only hurts while the gun is going , as soon as that noise stops so does any pain ......and when you stand up and look in the mirror , that's a good feeling .

Over all if you have a good artist he will know if you are not coping and help you through it , take a drink , have a good feed before you go , good sleep , be in a good frame of mind , takes some panadol ....

Get to know the artist before you get it done , visit the store a few times first .
It is painful but not to bad , in fact it is quiet enjoyable ....

Thank you for all your replies to my post. You could say i am one of those ppl that was brought up not even knowing how to hold a Cig or knew nothing about the outside world. I was very sheltered from the under side of life, only knew enough to get by till i was able to move out on my own n start a family of my own n a life full of wonders n blessings. Lifes to short to not do all you can while you are here on earth. I would of never thought about getting a Tattoo if i had nt been giving a fresh start. Getting a Tattoo, drinking etc were things that in my family you didnt talk about or do. I dont think getting a Tattoo is such a bad thing, but in my family its something thats taboo, i wont hear the last of it till i am 6 feet under for this, but hey i am an adult n i feel getting a Tattoo is a Sign of Inner Strength. I have already gone through 2 C sections, I was tied up in knots over the idea of having one, but after the first one it was a breeze, no biggie. Smile I say of i can do you all can do it.

i dont care how tough you think you are tats hurt ........
I'm not sure if the Wimp remark was directed at me , but i think the bigger man would admit to being in pain rather than claiming 4 hour tats dont hurt at all .... Shocked

my first tattoo was about 4" big and on my shoulder blade of a tribal dragon. it definitely hurt. all the others i have (i'm up to 6 right now) have hurt too, but it really depends on where you're going to get it at. i can tell you my forearm didn't hurt all that bad, but my inner ankle (the tattoo goes from atop my shin to the side of my calf) hurt really bad! it also depends on the artist. my chest pieces didn't hurt with the artist i use, but some artists go deeper in the skin and put more pressure on it.
don't be nervous about the tattoo... it's not the worst pain in the world. heck, if it was a really bad pain, i would have not gotten any more after the first! (i'm a big baby like that sometimes...) also, i wouldn't go with something massive for the first tattoo... start small and see if you can handle it. make sure you eat before you get it done too. i had a friend that didn't eat before hand, and he passed out in the chair. it was hilarious!

I know the legal age is 18 but what has that got to do with if tattoos hurt or not?[/quote]

Im just very very interested how among the thousands of posts and members we have,You are the only one who is saying that tattoos dont hurt .Come on who are you trying to kid ,you must be the first on the planet not to feel any pain ,unless of course you used numbing cream .as for the age thing im wondering if you were tattood in a shop or a house ,and how was the equipment steralised.have you been to be checked for any disiese you may have contracted by dirty equipment. just my opinion, but when newbies ask if it hurts and you say no ,yhey are gonna be in for one hell of a shock.as you know.

i never claimed that tattoos don't hurt. in fact, i said they hurt like hell in some of the spots i got them. to say they don't hurt is a lie. being a female, my chest didn't hurt as bad... it was more of an annoyance than anything. cha' know?

Just had my first tattoo today and it was only very small lettering (the word Freedom) low on the back of my neck, but I found it barely hurt at all. It was only about 30-40 mins to do so I imagine going in for much longer would be more painful.

The scariest part was just waiting around before hand because I was getting myself worked up but once she started working on it I was very relieved at how little it hurt me.

I'm glad I got something small though to begin with, hope that helps Very Happy

There is a plethora (sorry about the long word there Rowdy) of threads about the pain involved in tattooing on here. Indeed somewhere on the net there is a chart of the male and female body that goes into great depth about which parts of the body hurt most.

I think that most of us will agree that tattooing is painful however we would also agree that it is not unbearable.

There are a lot of variables about the pain from the location on the body, the type of machine used, the tattooists personal style and you as a person. In a different thread there was some chat about hand tattooing Rowdy found it really painful, my hand done tattoo was less painful than machine work.

The important thing is what to do to minimise the pain, have a drink handy, eat beforehand consider this new numbing spray (never used it but seems quite popular) you can also take a paracetomal before hand (again not done this myself but have heard of it) most importantly learn to realise when you have had enough i can only take about 2.5 hours after that i wobble like a baby.

Well said.

I got my first one 9 years ago, and went back to get my second this past summer. I wasn't familiar with any tattoo salons in the nyc area. So I did what any reasonable person would do---scouted them out in person.
I was lucky to find an artist who made my (second) experience tolerable. My tat artist has great bedside manners. Even though the pain factor was a solid 8, it was well worth it.

Needless to say, it's been almost 5 months, and I could consider him a pal of mine Very Happy

I just got my first tattoo last night, on my ankle, and it hurt.
It hurt WAY less than natural child birth though, and I did that twice.

It was kinda like a burning, stinging pain.

I got my first tattoo 8 days ago n i couldnt be happier with it. I was offered the Numbing spray when i went in to be tattooed, i said yes n i do not regret it not one bit, it made the experience much more enjoyable n made it more tempting to get more or to add to my current one. I plan on getting a humming bird added to my first n current tattoo at some point.

GO NUMBING SPRAY Smile~

I was a ball of nerves before i went in to have it done. I had read up on the Spray n had email contact with a couple places in my area. The one place, the place i finally went to replied back n said they use the spray n that it works well. The day i went in to get my tattooed i right away asked about the spray n again asked how well it worked.. the artist said well, others have used n they had no complaints. My ankle was sprayed with it a couple times, i sat n waited about 10 minutes for it to dry under a fan, by this time the artist was ready to go, so i sat up on the bench n put my leg at the end of the bench n was told i was going to be given a poke to see how its going to feel. I put my hand over my caf thinking it was going to hurt, i had my nails already in my skin of my caf before he even touched me, once he did i was re leaved it wasn't like i had read n was told it was going to be. It was like someone was moving razer across your skin repeatedly with out the pain, no discomfort till after i had gotten home n the spray wore off, it started to burn like a sun burn, but nothing i hadnt felt before when i had gotten a sun burn growing up. It took an hour n 13 minutes to complete. The artist didnt leave any spot untouched. I was pleased n still am. Its scabbing over now, i have been putting the tattoo goo on once a day to keep it from getting to dried out n to help it heal better. I cant wait to see it once its all done doing its healing thing Smile

Heres are some pictures of my tattoo. I will be adding a humming bird at some point then it will be complete.

i got back a few hours ago from having my first tattoo, a complex graphical image on the inside of my bicep. i'd discovered via forums and word of mouth and the internet in general that this was one of the most painful places to have a tattoo - so naturally i feared the worst.

so the truth is... yes, it hurt. but not actually that much and certainly not as much as i'd been led to believe. to be honest the first hour when she was doing the outlining i was actually enjoying myself, even when she went up near the armpit. only towards the end of the second hour when she was thickening up some of the lines and beginning to colour did i start to get a bit annoyed with it. the pain doesn't get any more intense you just begin to get tired of it.

so if anyone is not having a tattoo because of the fear of pain just forget about it and do it. it really isn't so bad. Very Happy

I just got my first tattoo done past Friday.

The outline really hurt me, poor artist had to put up with me jerking everytime he put the needle in! But after the outline, the colour and shading are nothing! But afterwards, you do get a buzz out of it and want more!

I'm scheduled to get my fourth tattoo in two weeks. This one will take several sessions. Good thing, b/c I won't be able to sit still after two hours or so. I can't wait...it's going to look so awesome!
