| I have my tongue pierced and I am wondering if I can handle that will I be able to handle having a tat? I would like to get one that has something to do with my 16 month old daughter since she means so much to me and she was a premature baby and has come so far in her short life! I just fear the pain for some reason! |

| This is something that I have to admit that I wonder if I am going to be able to handle. My younger sister is more of a whimp then me and she got a tattoo but I wonder if I will make it through? |

Sorry to burst your bubble but just because someone else made it through does not necesarily me that you will no matter how much of a whimp the other person is.
I got my tongue pierced and I am considered to be pretty whimpy, two of my friends went who are supposed to be hard and the one fainted at the sight of the needle. |

I have wanted a tattoo and a tongue ring since I was 13 I've been told with a tongue ring it hurts for a couple of days. I got my first tattoo when I was 18 when, of my daughter's name (MIKIYA) I got a devils tail on the Y of her name. When the guy first start it stung a little but it didn't hurt honestly it feels like a shot and the pain was not there when I started talking the people around me. it depends on where your getting I've been told that its best to do it where you have the most 'fat' I got mine on my left arm and I'm going back to get three more and a tongue ring. So, good luck. I believe if you went through labor you can do anything just breathe

| I think it depends on where you get the tattoo and how much you can tolerate pain. Some people can't stand pain while others have a high tolerance for it. I think if you went through the pain of delivering a baby then you can withstand a needle prickling your skin. Again, it all depends. |

i had my 1st tattoo yesterday. and i myself have given birth too. i would prefer to give birth than have a tattoo!! it bloody hurts. i had mne on the top of my back in the middle (very boney there) so i think that added to the pain. it felt let a needle that was extremely hot being draggd over my skin very hard over and over agin. it made me physically sick . if your going for one i surgest (from experience!) thats its a small one on a fatty area ie top of your arm. mine is quite big fopr a 1st tattoo its about 7-8" big |

| Sorry that you did not have a better expierence. I have to admit that I did experience some pain during my tattoos but it wasn't anything like what you are describing. I did have mine in mostly fatty areas so that may have helped out like you said! |

| I have one on my ankle, a chinese symbol with my babies names, which was bearable, one on my left shoulderblade, which was completely UNpainful, and just had a new one on Thursday, on my lower back, it took 2.5 hours to do that one, and although it was painful in certain areas, I can honestly say it was worth it, at one point I actually felt myself dozing off as I was hunched right over, it was at it's most painful getting the shading put over the areas that were already coloured. But like I said, if it's something you really want, the pain is worth it when you see the finished product. |

| When I got my tattoo I almost did not feel a thing. Then again I have plenty of fat so that really does help out. My friend had one done the same day and she got it on the same body location that I did and had all kinds of pain. |

I can honestly say it is a totally bearable pain. For me it feels like an irritating sensation rather than painful. I remember my first tat, i was shaking with nerves and got it fairly small as i didn't want to be unable to see it through if it really hurt. I went on to have four (two of which are pretty big, shoulder to shoulder and hip to hip) and am planning my fifth so truthfully i don't find it bad at all. One tip i can give you though is to chew gum. I might be talking rubbish but it works for me. Seriously, i've had them done without chewing and i felt it more but when i'm chewing gum it gives me something to bite on if he hits a tender area and also gives me something to do. I haven't given birth naturally, i had a caesarean, but after a 59 hour labour i can tell you hand on heart that tattooing is far less painful than contractions!!
Obviously this is just my opinion and its different with everyone. Also try and eat an hour or so beforehand as sometimes the pain (it does hurt some people) or even the nreves can make you feel sick or dizzy and eating beforehand helps with this. Good luck!

Hi All,
I was just reading through this conversation and even though it was from the tail end of last year, i just wanted to say that getting a tattoo is different each time, it just depends on where you are having it done and your pain thresh hold!! i have ten at the momeent and i thought the only one that has been nippy was the one at the base os my spine, but it wasn't enough to put me off that was four years ago and my second Now i have another nineand getting anohta on my right thigh in two weeks time!!!! so excited.

I sort of liked the pain of getting my tattoos done. (if that makes sense). one on my upper thigh n one on my lower back. thigh one didnt hurt at all. The back one did hurt but it was bearable! The Tattooist asked me if I actually had a nervous system!! He also joked that he'd done a Newcastle FC badge on me - I wasn't happy Ha ha x. The best way to get thru it is to talk....... and i'm GOOD at talking.
My next 1 is gonna be on the inside of my wrist and i'm a bit wary as it's 8yrs since i got my last one. I've given birth in that time so I can take ANY pain (I hope anyway!)
see ya

| From most of my conversations with people who have had lots of work done, it depends on whether you're being worked on by some scratcher using a stencil or a genuine artist who does his/her work freehand. The latter will hurt less. |

| I just got my first one done a couple days ago. I thought it would be much more painful. My sister held my hand and I had to squeeze it a couple times, but it wasn't bad. I chose to lay down and not see it, but she said that at certain points she could see my muscle twitch. Oh, I forgot to say... I got it on my right ankle. I have pics on my profile... I plan on getting more now that I know it's not as bad as everyone kept telling me! |

Its all about your own personal pain threshold.
I've had 3 now and none of which i would class as pain. Don't get me wrong i can feel it and sometimes need to concentrate on something else but i personally think when i fell of my bike and scrapped my knee that hurt more and the pain def lasted longer than a tattoo |

[b]I have a big fear of needles.. so its odd that I got a tattoo.. But i just wanted it so much!
Before a tattoo, you really hype yourself up too much, expecting a lot more pain than you actually will.
Thats what I did anyway. And yes.. it hurt. The best way to describe it, is like feeling a needle scrape across your flesh repeatedly.
Dont watch! Keep talking, and suck on something sugary!
Most people pass out because of low blood sugar levels.. not because of pain.

I have heard many times that women handle tattoos better then men do.
The only one I have that really got to me and made me wonder about my
sanity was my neck peice LOL. |
