i agree that it depends where the tattoo will be,,
i got mine on my low back on the left side..
there were some parts that hurt,,
i wanted it on my ribcage
but the tattoo artist told me that it would hurt a lot more
i admit that it already hurt on my low back,,
there were parts that it really sting..
i flinched a lot,, especcially at the beginning
but i got used to the pain in the middle till the end

I dont know where to start first.
Let me shortly introduce myself.I am tattoo artist for last 14 years and in tattoo world since i was 13 years.
Why i am telling this? In all this years always the same.

DOES IT HURTS ?????

Yes it does.It is your skin and you have to feel it.But it is on you how you going to feel tattoo.
If you come unprepared,scared,nervous it is going to hurt you a lot.
The worst is first 5-10 minutes.Why??
Lets say you are scared and nervous.Human brain is like that.Scared of unknown.First few minutes it will hurts you.What you can do?
You can relax,free your mind ,dont think on tattoo,no matter how much it hearts.That is important.In this way you are helping to your brain and he helps you.

How?

If you are relaxed,your brain is going to accommodate,recognise that he had nothing to "worry" about,and shortly after that you will feel some less pain..and less.

Lets be honest.It is on each person.If you prepared yourself on tattoo everything is going to be ok.But if you are constantly scared, nervous it will be very hard for you and for your tattoo artist too.Your skin will be very tense,you will feel it more than it is normal,bleed more...

Eat something before you go to get tattoo,try to think positive ( you will have it for your whole life ) and RELAX.

i totally agree
when i got my first tattoo
i came totally unprepared
i was so nervous
when it was about to happen
i flinched even if the needle didnt touch my skin yet
my body was so stiff
but after a while
i learned to relax
and didnt feel it as much

but everybody is different, we all know that
and everybody reacts differently to their tattoos
like, me for example, i got my first tatt on my back
and honestly, it didnt hurt for me, like, it was very underwhelming pain
im not trying to sound like a macho, tough guy. it just didnt really hurt for me
so my second tattoo was on my ribs. guess how much that hurt! Laughing

i was almost in tears. and all my friends were like, "i thought it didnt hurt?!". haha

so yes, like inkedgal said, its all about where it is and how much pain you can tolerate

It definetely depends on where you get it and your pain tolerance. Also, it feels different on certain spots for different people.
I'm actually terrified of needles, so at first, I choose to get one where I couldn't see what was happening.
For my 1st one, I ended up getting a 4' gecko on my right shoulder blade and it didn't hurt at all. That's when I got hooked.
My 2nd was a Gemini symbol with two intertwined snakes on the inside of my left wrist. No real pain on that one either.
3rd was a water & fire yin-yang on my left arm. Nope, didn't hurt.
4th was a frog below my belly button. Not too bad...just a lot of shading over the same areas again and again. Guess my tummy was too flappy and the ink didn't want to go in.
5th one was a fish with an eye as it's body on my left shoulder blade. That one had me flinching quite a bit.
My 6th one is a heart-shaped ladybug on the top of my right hand above that piece of skin that connects the thumb and pointer finger. Didn't hurt. Of course I had a really bad toothache that night and was oblivious to everything else.
7th one is a small dragon below the yin-yang on my left arm. That one didn't really hurt either.
My 8th was a flowering vine on the front of my left ankle. Not bad.
My 9th one was a butterfly on a vine almost the full length of my right calf. Oh My God! I have never felt such pain...plus my leg kept spasming uncontrolably. Of course I won't let that stop be from getting more because the end result was worth the pain.
I'm planning to put my next one on top of my left wrist right where it meets my hand. It's going to be a small "chain" with a few tear shaped jewels off of it, sort of like a bracelet, but not fully encircling my wrist.
I also have plans for a lower back piece which I'm a little nervous about because I've heard such horror stories. Drew, I'm glad to hear that it didn't hurt for you...maybe I'll have the same luck.

I got my first tattoo done on my ankle and down the side of my foot and when the tattooist asked me if it was my first and where I wanted and I told him, the first thing he said was "Ouch. That's gonna hurt!!"... which didn't help at all. But it really wasn't as bad as I thought.

It felt like it was burning a bit the closer to my ankle the needle got. My sister thought hers felt like scratching. So I think it all just depends on the person, and obviously where abouts on your body you get it done.

The only one I have that hurt me significantly was my wrist. The outside of my wrist, just above the bone. The other three were nothing, in fact I actually enjoyed having them all done, except the wrist, or number three as it is known Laughing

It does depend on the person. You can't relate anything at all to getting a tattoo. When I was younger I used to go with my Mum when she was inked and I was terrified of the sound of the needle but I'm not any more - it just makes me think about what's going to happen and I get extremely excited when I know I'm going to be getting something new.

My best friend has given birth to a 9lb baby girl, and she couldn't cope with a tattoo. She wanted a love heart on the inside of her right wrist, but she just got the outline and hasn't had it coloured... A prime example of how you can't relate one kind of pain to another Wink

i have got to admit that i am a wimp. however i also have 5 tattoos all pretty good size. i have no idea what child birth is like and no desire to find out. i started with a small tattoo and now after having a large back piece done im working on a sleeve on my left arm. i dont know if anybody else has noticed but if you go to a proffesional tattooist with a lot of expericance and a good studio they will put you alot more at ease and it seems to hurt less. my opinion is just go for it the ends justify the means.

Dont play in to thoese horror tatttoo stories....
get one near your wrist for a 1st timer

just dont be nervous,well you can be but dont freak out,dont look at the needle..instead look around at the pretty tattoo designs on the wall or simply think of something else such as a song.Bring something to grab on to like a purse or a soda bottle to on take the pain...grin...as it will help u handle the pain.

also if you need it as the artist for a break for a few seconds...a good artist will understand.

you wont like die......
so there isnt much to worry about

the only one i have had that i would say actually hurt would be the one that crosses my left collar bone and partially the top of my shoulder it is the japanese kanji for family. I have the kanji symbol for pride in the same spot on my right and it didnt hurt hardly at all. The only time they really hurt was when he crossed the bones. And i also have my left wrist done top and bottom and neither of them hurt at all. But those are my opinions and i enjoy the needles from the gun i guess you could call me a pain freak.LOL

hi , just thought i would say that every tattoo i have had have been fine but once i started on the neck thats were things get painful

I just got my first piece a week ago, on my ribs (not knowing they were the most painful spot, but if I had known I still would have gotten it). I haven't had any other tattoos so I can't compare but it hurt very badly. I was in there maybe two hours getting it done, sometimes I could get my mind off of it and think about something else, then he'd switch spots and it'd all come back.
One certain spot when he'd tattoo I could feel it in my elbow, and in another spot I could feel it in my armpit.

He told me I was "one tough little girl" haha

i often feel the vibration in my armpit , when getting my sleeve work done ...it is a very odd feeling and one i am not to fond off .

I had my first tattoo on my right shoulder when I was 22 & thats when I got hooked. I had a bad experience with this tattoo, as the tattooist who did this tattoo ground the needle into my shoulder blade. Yes it HURT & yes I passed out. This experience has not put me off having anymore having more tattoo's done, as last year I had a big one done on my calf & I am having 2 more done later this month & 2 more after that.

As previously mentioned it all depends on your pain level in your own body, everybody is different as to how much pain they can take.

I want a tattoo on my lower back, I will admit at the moment I am 75% not sure and 25% want one, but the reason for this is I have seriously damaged muscles in my spine from a car/Motor accident & I am very weary of my spine. I live with pain on a day to day basis & believe me I would rather sit & have a tattoo anyday, than live with pain I have to live with from this accident.

I have been advised by my tattooist now there is cream /gel I can use on my spine to numb it before I have tattoo done if I want it done on my spine because of my injuries & yes the cream/gel does work I've already tried it.

But as I am the mistress of pain I would rather not use it if I don't have to
