I'm about to get my first tattoo on Feb. 16th 2008. I'm really excited about it, but at the same time I'm a little nervous. I am a bit scared of the pain. I'm getting the tattoo on my calf, closer to my ankle but not on it. It's going to be about 2-3 inches big. Generally, I want to know how painful this experince might be, and what it feels like to get a tattoo. I've had a very painful experience in which my fingernail was ripped and pulled from my nailbed. I had to get 2 huge needles in between my fingers to numb my hand so the Dr. could cut the remains off. Then, I had stitches in my nailbed, and it was the most painful thing I've ever been through to get those stitches pulled out. So I'm figuring that if I can take that pain, I could handle a small tattoo. What do you all think? |

| a tattoo will be a drop in the ocean compared to haveing your finger nail ripped out, for me getting tattooed is like a tickle and a sting at the same time. after its done there might be a little burning sensation until it settels, for a tattoo about 2 to 3 inches round should only take about half an hour to 45 minites so dont be nervous your tattooist will proberly start with a few small strokes to give you an idea of what it will feel like since it is you first time beening tattooed |

Rest well the night before, eat a good meal before going to your appointment and go there knowing that it's going to be a great experience. You're going to wonder why you were so worried. Also, lucky you! Youre getting tattooed on my birthday. |

About 2 months ago I got my first tat as well. My artist took a mechanical pencil and did a line on my arm(pretty freakin hard I might add XD) and she said picture that but with a bit of burning. So maybe give that a try in your tat area. Some parts will hurt me then other parts. For me some parents I could only feel the vibrate of the machine others it was pretty hard XD so just try the mechanical pencil thing but picture it as a more of a burning hot scratch. Hope this helps and just eat/drink before you go there and don't worry about it. Once the tat is over all the pain will be worth it |

Tattooing doesn't hurt too bad.. getting tattooed ain't nothing compared to having your fingernail ripped off. To me the sound of the tattoo machine is what scared me when i went to get my first tattoo. All i did was grit my teeth and went for it. i found out that it wasn't as bad as i thought it was |

They do hurt, no question about it. The worse thing about it is probably knowing that you have to finish the piece nomatter how bad it hurts. I just got a decent size piece on the top of my right wrist and it was one of my more paintfull tattoos. It all depends on the location and the person getting it. My girlfriend got her first the other day and was almost in tears where as I got a bigger piece and was fine through the whole thing. Something that small shouldnt be a problem at all.

first off, congratulations on picking my birthday to get your tatoo. LOL.
As far as pain goes, it really isn't bad. You're calf doesn't have too many nerve endings, anyway, so thats a pretty good place to start, i guess.
For me, the first few minutes it almost feels like someone's pinching you, after that, your mind just blocks it out. Unless they hit a nerve spot. That'll give you a little wake-up, but it not excrutiating or anything.
As far as afterwards, to me it feels like a sunburn for a few days.
I definitely wouldn't let the little bit of pain stop you. Think of how common tatoos are these days, if they were that bad, would that many people be getting them? |
