not that i want to get dragged into an OT slanging match... but come on, Nazi Tattooist, who are you trying to kid?? you're banging on about the swastika being a symbol of peace (of course its original meaning is a sanskrit symbol of well being), but you've made it patently clear that its the nazi connotations that interest you. therefore, by using the swastika and the user name 'nazi tattooist' you are making a strong and offensive (how could you think it wouldn't be??) statement.

reading history and opening your eyes would be my recommendation to you. is it too late to hope that you'll see the real truth about what happened in those awful, dark years of the holocaust?

sorry, but i just can't help reacting to poisonous, ill informed nonsense like this.

PostPosted: Mon Oct 08, 2007 11:44 am Post subject: swastika meaning.... Reply with quote

The swastika is an ancient symbol that has been used for over 3,000 years. (That even predates the ancient Egyptian symbol, the Ankh!) Artifacts such as pottery and coins from ancient Troy show that the swastika was a commonly used symbol as far back as 1000 BCE.

During the following thousand years, the image of the swastika was used by many cultures around the world, including in China, Japan, India, and southern Europe. By the Middle Ages, the swastika was a well known, if not commonly used, symbol but was called by many different names:

China - wan
England - fylfot
Germany - Hakenkreuz
Greece - tetraskelion and gammadion
India - swastika

Though it is not known for exactly how long, Native Americans also have long used the symbol of the swastika.
The Original Meaning

The word "swastika" comes from the Sanskrit svastika - "su" meaning "good," "asti" meaning "to be," and "ka" as a suffix.

Until the Nazis used this symbol, the swastika was used by many cultures throughout the past 3,000 years to represent life, sun, power, strength, and good luck.

Even in the early twentieth century, the swastika was still a symbol with positive connotations. For instance, the swastika was a common decoration that often adorned cigarette cases, postcards, coins, and buildings. During World War I, the swastika could even be found on the shoulder patches of the American 45th Division and on the Finnish air force until after World War II.

In the 1800s, countries around Germany were growing much larger, forming empires; yet Germany was not a unified country until 1871. To counter the feeling of vulnerability and the stigma of youth, German nationalists in the mid-nineteenth century began to use the swastika, because it had ancient Aryan/Indian origins, to represent a long Germanic/Aryan history.

By the end of the nineteenth century, the swastika could be found on nationalist German volkisch periodicals and was the official emblem of the German Gymnasts' League.

In the beginning of the twentieth century, the swastika was a common symbol of German nationalism and could be found in a multitude of places such as the emblem for the Wandervogel, a German youth movement; on Joerg Lanz von Liebenfels' antisemitic periodical Ostara; on various Freikorps units; and as an emblem of the Thule Society

In 1920, Adolf Hitler decided that the Nazi Party needed its own insignia and flag. For Hitler, the new flag had to be "a symbol of our own struggle" as well as "highly effective as a poster." (Mein Kampf, pg. 495)

On August 7, 1920, at the Salzburg Congress, this flag became the official emblem of the Nazi Party.

In Mein Kampf, Hitler described the Nazis' new flag: "In red we see the social idea of the movement, in white the nationalistic idea, in the swastika the mission of the struggle for the victory of the Aryan man, and, by the same token, the victory of the idea of creative work, which as such always has been and always will be anti-Semitic." (pg. 496-497)

Because of the Nazis' flag, the swastika soon became a symbol of hate, antisemitism, violence, death, and murder

What Does the Swastika Mean Now?

There is a great debate as to what the swastika means now. For 3,000 years, the swastika meant life and good luck. But because of the Nazis, it has also taken on a meaning of death and hate.

These conflicting meanings are causing problems in today's society. For Buddhists and Hindus, the swastika is a very religious symbol that is commonly used. Chirag Badlani shares a story about one time when he went to make some photocopies of some Hindu Gods for his temple. While standing in line to pay for the photocopies, some people behind him in line noticed that one of the pictures had a swastika. They called him a Nazi.

Unfortunately, the Nazis were so effective at their use of the swastika emblem, that many do not even know any other meaning for the swastika. Can there be two completely opposite meanings for one symbol?

In ancient times, the direction of the swastika was interchangeable as can be seen on an ancient Chinese silk drawing.

Some cultures in the past had differentiated between the clockwise swastika and the counter-clockwise sauvastika. In these cultures the swastika symbolized health and life while the sauvastika took on a mystical meaning of bad-luck or misfortune.

But since the Nazis use of the swastika, some people are trying to differentiate the two meanings of the swastika by varying its direction - trying to make the clockwise, Nazi version of the swastika mean hate and death while the counter-clockwise version would hold the ancient meaning of the symbol, life and good-luck.

tho this is a friendly forum, very friendly, to me at least.......
lets not judge people for the ignorance of themselves or the
non exsisting ability they lack to educate themselves on issues, etc,
they have no clue about.

i hope this sets everyone straight......
thank you kindly for your time........,

Maybe have membership at the site get a quick once over by a mod before activating an account for new members. Yes this may scare some people away, but it would give the mod's or admin a bit of a chance to reject some of the useless posters before they get a chance to post. This is what we done at a site that I modded at for years and we found that the people that really wanted to post there didn't have a problem with the slight delay in activation when it comes to have quality members.
Also having the "Report this post" button activated will give all of the members a chance to help the mod's out by pointing out problem posts rather than the mod's having to read every single post.

Some people might also need to be reminded that they are not paying a single dime to post here so it is a privillage and that they are using this site for free. Also if any member does not like the rules or the way the site is run.......... There is a red X in the top righthand corner that they can click at any time. It's not prison and the members are not incarcerated. So if someone doesn't like the rules......... They are free to leave.

Just my opinion though. Smile

You don't even seem to be able to get your point across without hurling insults and then you have the balls to complain about the grammar skills of others. Rolling Eyes

I myself have had no problems with the mod's here and find them to be very personable and friendly. If you actualy wanted to get resolution and work it out you could send the other person a PM stating your case instead trying to "one up" them in public. This only forces the other person to defend themselves.

No matter how you look at it............ You have no rights here. Allthough it is a public forum and you are a member, you have no say in anything. Love it or leave it, that's just the way it is.

If you can get used to this and understand that you are a guest in someone else's home and have to do as they wish, you'll have a great time here.

Have a nice day.

Perhaps a tattoo comunity isn't the place to talk politics, history, relligon and other sensitive issues?

You'll have to admit that your user name and avatar didn't exactly make you Mr. ordinary average guy, Did it?

And if a mod get's cranky with one of us here.... Is it going to kill us to just let it go and accept that maybe they had a bad day and now they're not overly excited about spending some time here at their non-paying job? After all, they vollonteer their time.

In many other communities mod's not only would lock this thread, but it would be deleted without explantion. If members would start a new thread to keep beating the same dead horse, they would be IP banned for mod sas.

Look around, you'll see this place isn't all that bad.

Maybe PM this mod and deal with it at that levell. You'll find people are much more receptive when approached in this manner.

Give it a shot. What do you have to lose? Nothing.

Nazi Tattoist

To coin a phrase you are really gripping my sh1t.

You have been asked on several occasions by the mods on here to stop going out of your way to insult and upset people still it continues.

Rowdy even had the courtesy to unlock this thread and asked for us all to play nicely, clearly you cant manage that.

You continue to find little ways to upset and annoy other users ie your stated location.

Personally i think that you have come here purely on a big wind up and are laughing so much about this that your shrivelled and sunken b0llocks are likely to fall off.

I am about to delete some of your crap on here again if you post any more drivel then the thread will be locked and your account deleted, if you join here again under a differnet name then fine just done go out of your way to p1ss us off any more t0sser.
