I plan on getting 2 tattoos within the next few months (that is if i like the first one) now I don't mean to offend anybody but is a pheonix more of a female symbol? Is it a girly tattoo? I found one that I liked and I'm pretty sure it was on a guy but im not sure. I have a few reasons for getting it. I like the design, i like what the pheonix symbolizes and just as an added bonus my brother has a dragon and the dragon and the pheonix are both very highly respected chinese symbols. So what do you guys think?

i think it is only feminine if you intend it to be lol. in my opinion, it depends on the way that it is depicted. if it is a weakish kind of depiction with eyelashes and ***** then yeah its feminine. on the other hand if it is a stronger-looking depiction.. you get it. and besides, men get tattoos of women, which is so clearly a feminine imaage, so what is to say that you cannot have a tattoo of a female phoenix.

no, the way i see it the pheonix may seem feminine to some because the abdoman (sp.) is shaped somewhat like a heart, but it is masculine because of the broadness of it (wings, head, chest, tail, all of it). it seems more masculine than anything but somewhat genderless to me =]

Yeah see thats what I thought. The stomach of it seemed sorta girly and the head a TINY bit but I have to agree with you that because of the spread of the wings that it does have a masculine feel to it. I still want to change it up a bit maybe the artist can change it a bit and maybe add a few things to it to give it even more of masculine look. ANybody here want to try and take a stab at it?

The Legend of the Pheonix goes back to when Zeuss' mortal lover Semele was tricked by his wife Juno into asking to see Zeus in all his slendour not knowing that if a mortal looks upon a God she will be barbequed.
Zeus tries to talk her out of it but Juno has said that he would do that to hide great things from her and to declare that if he doesn't she should give the feminine ultimatum.
Zeus loves her and so finally accomodates her wishes and when she looks she is fried and the Pheonix rises from the smoldering remains of Semele. The Pheonix later turns into Bachaas and he in turn butchered by the Titans. So that is the history of it, it is up to you to judge if it is girly.
Semele was definately a girl and Bachaas an androgynen meaning a bit of both so there you go. But many guys have it unaware of the history of the legend.
