why is that out of three identical planters, each with six sunflowers, that sit one foot apart on our lovely sunny patio only one is flourishing while in the other two all the plants are struggling to remain upright and grow beyond 18 inches?
it just don't make sense

Its all about genetics. Were the seeds f1 hybrids or were they out of a pack of bird food.If they were out of bird seed the seeds could have had different sunflower parents.F1 hybrids however have been bred to resemble the parent plant as close as possible. That is why f1 seeds are more expensive the seeds planted in the same quality compost are one or two in a draft in the shade, have some dried out and the one doing well not dried out if all the conditions are truly the same then its all down to the luck of the draw most of us have kids but thank goodness they don't all look the same act the same grow the same its all pre determined how tall what colour etc the plants will be in the genetics of the seed.weather conditions drought poor quality compost can all alter how well the plant does to some degree. You may find the stragglers will catch up later in the season.
Good luck blamski im sending you some good vibes think big I'm sure they will grow. |

Wow, Mag - I'm impressed! No wonder your gardens are always so beautiful
The only thing I could think of is if you had something else in the pots prior to the sunflowers, maybe something soaked into the pot and is leaching out into the soil of the affected ones? |

hey mag - i'm impressed aswell.
your theory is a good one aswell, momma
BUT...
all the seeds are from the same packet from a good garden centre. each planter was brand new, as was the compost in each one. for all intents and purposes the three are identical... apart from the fact that one has lovely healthy plants and two have things doing their best impression of weeds.
we've moved each planter to a different part of the patio now but haven't seen much change in growth in any of them.
now, where's the smiley for scratching my head and looking stuck?
anyway - i'm having a new tat tomorrow so i don't really care about anything else

ha! Just kidding.
Good luck on the tattoo tomorrow - let us know what you get ! |
